As such, motivation has both an objective side — a goal or thing you aspire to — and an internal or subjective aspect: it is you that wants the thing or wants it to go away. Intrinsic motivation is the act of doing something without any obvious external rewards. An example of intrinsic motivation would be reading a book because you enjoy reading and have an interest in the story or subject, rather than reading because you have to write a report on it to pass a class. Psychologists use the concept of need to describe the motivational properties of behavior. A need is lack or deficit of some necessity. The imbalance caused by the need arouses the organism to maintain its balance. For any goal directed behavior, need is the first condition or stimulating factor.
